…that is America. I ran into this article this morning. It’s always the people who espouse the highest of moral values who end up actually being the lowest of the low.
Yes, I love Playgirl’s blog, so sue me;)

I’m a liberal, hell I’m an extremist on some levels. I once told a friend the best description for me was a socialist libertarian. I think everyone should pay higher taxes so we can all take care of each other but we should be allowed to live our lives any way we damn well please.
I am however also a realist. When it comes to a president I typically vote for the person I think can most represent the middle. We have many extreme factions in this country but the President should be able to take the best of each and find a compromise that works. Obviously Bush is not that guy. For my money John Edwards is the candidate who can do this best of our current crop of candidates.
Here’s why I’m pissed. I think this current two person democratic primary race is a joke. It’s a bunch of knee-jerk liberals who want to make history by voting for a woman or an African-American. Even if neither are the right person for the job.
Now I like both Obama and Clinton. Actually I kind of love Hillary but there are very strong reasons to not vote for either one of them. Bill Clinton was an excellent middle guy. He crossed the aisle many times and got some good things done. Yet he still managed to polarize this country. The Republicans hated him with such a vengeance that they spent millions to air his sexual misadventures. Seriously, people? What the hell was that about? Hatred of Clinton or something he stood for, I’m still not sure what exactly. but a lot of it was Hillary. She rubbed them the wrong way because she opened her mouth. She still does. We polarized in the other direction under Bush. I just don’t see how another Clinton era can heal the wounds of the past 8 years. Not to mention that in the past 20 years we have had 4 years of a Bush, 8 years of a Clinton and 8 years of a Bush. Do we really want to add another 4-8 years of another Clinton?
If you’re a big Hillary fan I’ll give you my favorite reason why she shouldn’t be president. I call it the Ted Kennedy irony. Ted Kennedy has done more for this country than either of his brothers ever did. Now of course their lives were cut tragically short so we can’t know what future contributions could have been made but realistically as a senator Ted has helped passed numerous bills into law that have benefited millions. He has had in my opinion far more of a positive influence on our country than he ever could have as president.
At this point you may be thinking well then Obama is a nice fresh face. He might be able to unite rather than divide us. My issue with him is his youth. Not in age, more in political experience. After the past 8 years we are a mess. Even the Republicans are starting to admit it. I think it’s going to take a hell of a lot of work to make things work well again. Plus there needs to be a lot of healing of our international relationships. I’m not sure he’s ready for that. There is also the Oprah issue. I don’t like that he seems to be riding so high because of her support. Oprah has a lot of influence, too much if you ask me. I like her and I nearly always agree with her political opinions but that doesn’t make that kind of influence on a potential president any better. I don’t want another president who has other people whispering in his ear about what is important even if those things are seemingly what I want them to say.
By all means vote for Clinton or Obama if you really believe in what they are promoting but be sure that’s your reason. It’s not racist nor sexist to vote for a white man if he is the candidate you believe in. Edwards has plenty of things to make him the right man. Take some time to listen rather than voting by reflex.

I’ve been a little too quiet here. There is no excuse for it other than the fact that I’ve been rather uneasy in this primary season. I have decided who will get my vote in the NY primary on “Tsunami Tuesday” however…
Now, will you consider donating to the Edwards campaign to help get this ad on the air in South Carolina?
Give em hell John indeed!

From Raw Story:
It was revealed last week that firefighters are being trained to not only keep an eye out for illegal materials in the course of their duties, but even to report back any expression of discontent with the government.
“Any expression of discontent? Seriously? How much longer until our doctors, dentists and EMT’s get the go ahead to do the same? You better shred any reading matter in your house that might be construed as anti-government. You don’t want those spying firefighters poking around your stuff.
Is this the United States or did I just wake up in the wrong country? For a minute there I was thinking maybe I was in a gestapo run Germany and envisioned firefighters wearing black swastika laden SS uniforms.
New York city is currently the experimental city and if the program is a success it may roll out in other metropolitan areas.
Ketih Olbermann asked Mike German, a former FBI agent who is now with the ACLU said, “This program seems to be turning [firefighters], essentially, into legally protected domestic spies, does it not?”
“That’s the entire intent,” German replied, noting the serious legal issues involved. “There is actually still a fourth amendment,” he pointed out, “and what makes a firefighter’s search reasonable is that it’s done to prevent a fire. If now firefighters are going in with this secondary purpose, that end run around the fourth amendment won’t work, and it’s likely that they will find themselves in legal trouble.”
Lets’ hope that there is enough backlash from citizens in New York City and around the country to this program so that it is NOT deemed a success. I am safe for now in my little town of 300. That is until my mailman starts reporting suspicious looking mail.

Keith Olbermann frequently rails against “Fixxed Noise”. I try to catch his show Count Down on MSNBC whenever possible and I have to say it doesn’t surprise me one bit that Fox News stoops to these incredible lows. On the few occasions I have spent a minute or two watching the show out of curiosity and perhaps some comic relief, I have found the cleavage wielding, ditsy blonde footage somewhat offensive. Why? Because it’s obvious that they are further cheapening their “ faux news” by selling sex. Watch this compilation and you will see that strung together, Fox “news” has a lot of porn content. Shouldn’t there be some kind of law to prevent broadcasts masquerading as news? I mean come on people! Isn’t that false advertising? A lot of folks that I know actually believe this is real unbiased “balanced” news. And THAT is their sole source of news! This is terrifying! These people vote, some of them have large voices in their communities and this is their sole source for what’s going on in the world. One might argue that we can’t be expected to save stupid people from themselves but there are laws. I mean infomercials have to be disclosed and Faux news is nothing more than an infomercial for the Bushwhacker camp. If it’s not hawking the spin, it’s selling sex.

I really thought when I started liberalmom.com that I’d have plenty of material to blog about. But the sad truth is, I have too much. So much that when I sit down and write for liberalmom.com, I end up feeling sad and overwhelmed. In that, I’ve just sadly ignored liberalmom.com, and felt guilty about it.
So I’ve invited a few other liberal moms to “join the team”, so to say, and they will be posting periodically on various political topics, always from the point of view of the liberal mom. So put your hands together and give a warm welcome to some new contributors at liberalmom.com, Loren and Hannah. More contributors are coming over the next few days, so keep an eye out.

And I’m still poking around looking to see if there has been a legal fund set up, though I do know there are several firms working pro bono on the Jena 6 case.
